At ETBA, we’re proud to celebrate the journeys of our alumni who’ve gone on to impact communities far beyond the Toronto courts where they started. This week, we remember and honour Shanice Clark, a former ETBA player whose light, talent, and legacy continue to shine—10 years after her passing.
Shanice played with ETBA in the earlier part of her basketball journey. She later took her talents to the U.S., playing for Santa Fe College (2011–2013) in Gainesville, Florida. During her two seasons with the Santa Fe Saints, she became a standout athlete—helping her team to a 17–13 record and a state tournament appearance. She ranks 27th all-time in offensive rebounds and tied for 22nd in field goal percentage at the college.
After Santa Fe, Shanice continued her academic and athletic career at California University of Pennsylvania, where she played until her unexpected passing in January 2015. That same year, her team won the NCAA Division II National Championship—an achievement she was proudly a part of building.
But her legacy extends far beyond the stats and accolades.
“Shanice impacted all of us,” says former Santa Fe coach and current Athletic Director Chanda Stebbins. “She made a difference in my life, her teammates’ lives, and everyone around her. The fact that her teammates are honouring her 10 years later speaks volumes.”
To carry forward Shanice’s joy and impact, Santa Fe College created the Sunshine Award in her name, given annually to the player who brings light, friendship, and positivity to the team—just as Shanice always did.
This year, her former teammate Lydia Cuff (also an alum of Santa Fe) is leading a special tribute to mark 10 years since Shanice’s passing. She shares:
“Shanice was my rock when I moved to Florida—my friend, my voice when I was quiet, my push when I was tired. It’s hard to believe a decade has passed. I often wonder who she would be today, and what more she could’ve done. What I do know is that she made an unforgettable impact. And that’s why we’re coming together now—to speak her name, to share her story, and to ensure her legacy lives on.”
To commemorate Shanice’s legacy, donations are being collected for the Shanice Clark #44 Legacy Fund through the Santa Fe College Foundation. The goal: permanently display her jersey in the gym and continue celebrating her light for generations to come.
If you’d like to support, please consider donating or sharing the link with others who knew her—or who can be inspired by her story.
